Remember the days of 'cheap ass Tuesdays'? For me they were a staple of uni life - discounted movies and then following up with half priced waffles at Gelare. It's been years since I can remember dining at famed dessert chain Gelare, but I still think of it with fond memories of days gone by. So when I was contacted by Natasha at Devahasdin PR to pay my old stomping ground a visit, I couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic.
Back in those days of uni and cheap food, it was definitely a simpler time! Of course those were pre-Queen of Bad Timing days (though the nickname was around back then), and I didn't have nearly the same palate I do now. But when it comes to ice-cream, I knew my tastebuds would remember the tried and true flavours at Gelare like they're old friends.
Arriving at the Mount Lawley store we make our way up to the counter to confirm our presence since they're hosting us for the evening. Sadly I think something got mixed up in translation as they had no idea we were coming, but when I explained why I was there and offered to show them email confirmation they advised my boy and I to just let them know what we'd like to order.
To my surprise Jeremy actually hasn't been to Gelare before! Crazy I know. He's quite quick to make a choice, opting for their famed waffles in a regular size with vanilla ice-cream, whipped cream and maple syrup ($8.90).
The waffle is hot, fresh and crispy on the edges. He has to move quick as the ice-cream starts to melt from the contrast in temperature, but I can see he's really enjoying it. There's something really satisfying about that combo of flavours! Just watching him eat is sending me back to my younger days.
While I am quite interested in their revamped menu with updated waffle and pancake offerings, I am very much an ice-cream sundae kinda girl. My waffle basket ($7.90) is a scoop of strawberry ice-cream topped with whipped cream, hot fudge, nuts and a maraschino cherry (my weakness).
The strawberry ice-cream is just as I remember and oh so yummy. There's chunks of actual strawberries throughout and it's a nice balance between creamy and sweet. It's a great flavour and I really enjoy it. The basket is crisp and perfect to snap off pieces and scoop up some of my sundae with!
I actually quite enjoyed returning to Gelare after so long of not visiting. While the food was tasty, I would have liked to spend a bit more time with the staff - for them to make recommendations on what to try or to chat to us about the products. While I can understand they weren't prepared for our visit, we did feel like we were just put in a corner and forgotten about once they'd processed our complimentary orders. Never mind though because while that wasn't ideal, it all comes down to how things taste - and we left full and happy.
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice-cream.
Yummmmmm - I went to school down the road from that Gelare and have many fond memories of Tuesday afternoons spent indulging in Red Rooster chips then Gelare waffles!
ReplyDeleteP.S - loving the new blog layout :)
I know I have so many great memories of years long ago at Gelare! Funny how all these years later it still tastes the same as I remember :)
DeleteThanks! Thought new year, time to try a new layout!
There is still something about Gelare when you walk in. The aroma of the waffles baking is just sooooooo delicious. I like mine with cream and syrup best! Lovely layout btw!
