The cheese killah Toastface Grillah

Perth is evolving. Our once small city is growing, with funky little eateries popping up all over the place with exciting menus and interesting concepts. And with this change comes an ever-increasing wishlist of places I want to try. Toastface Grillah has been one of those places for me since before it opened.

The name is extremely clever, a play on famed Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah who has been around in the scene since the 90s and has been titled one of the top 50 MCs of all time. So with homage paid to an artist of this calibre, I was expecting big things for this little hole in the wall cafe.

Nestled down Grand Alley off Barrack Street in Perth, this place is grungy and decorated with street art and a simple decor. The food is a variety of grilled (or toasted) sandwiches - something that appeals to all of us as it floods back memories of our childhood. It's such a simple concept and yet genius at the same time. After all, who doesn't love a jaffle!

Jeremy and I set out there for a brunch time start to our day. I'm desperate for some food and then some shopping, and he's there because he heard the words toasted sandwich. And I'm happy to say they don't disappoint!

I order the Danny Zuccho ($9) which is brie cheese, prosciutto and zucchini. Jeremy opts for the Chilli Cheese ($7) which is cheddar, chilli and smoked paprika. Thankfully we're both on the same page and trade a half of our sandwiches so we can try both.

After we place our orders at the counter inside we take a seat in the courtyard. It's a bright sunny day and I'm pleased to see there's a couple copies of today's paper floating around for customers to read which relaxing. The decor is shabby chic - very hipster but in a non-pretencious manner. The atmosphere is relaxed and everyone around us seems to be enjoying themselves as they sip what I've heard are amazing coffees. Sometimes I really wish I was a coffee drinker so I could indulge in this pass time that so many love.

It's only about 10 minutes before our sandwiches come out, each nestled in a little cardboard box that is simple in presentation but allows the food to be the hero. They both smell incredible and the staff that serve us are extremely happy and energetic. It's nice to see people enjoying their job and passing on the good vibes to customers.

Both the Danny Zuccho and the Chilli Cheese are golden brown with crispy bread that has light score marks from the grill.

The prosciutto, zucchini and brie cheese are a great combination. The cheese is so creamy and light, the prosciutto extremely flavoursome. I like how the zucchini has some bite to it instead of becoming soggy like it can do sometimes. It's a really delicious sandwich.

But as much as I like it, I have to say I am completely in love with the Chilli Cheese. The cheddar is thick and hot, mild but with a nice aftertaste. The chilli present is enough to offer a little kick but doesn't overpower the sandwich's flavour. The whole thing is so gooey and decadent - definitely a winner!

I really enjoyed our trip (finally) to Toastface Grillah. It isn't fancy food, but it's homely and well done - something that makes it a place to try. I'm really looking forward to coming back and trying some of the other sandwiches such as the Three Cheeses or the Pear Grills. Oh and the Brie and Jam - that's definitely the next one I'm going to have when I'm back here. Yum!
