A menu amiss of it's name at Aubergine Gourmet Foods

I love going out for breakfast, it's definitely not a secret if you've ever read my blog. So when Jeremy's close friend Andrew invited us to an end of Ramadan feast at his house for lunch, I was more than happy to accept Jeremy's offer of having breakfast first in Fremantle. It's a beautiful day with amazingly blue skies and not too many clouds - just the right sort of weather for Freo.

We head down to Bib and Tucker, Eamon Sullivan's new hotspot in North Fremantle but unfortunately they're so busy we're told we won't be served before breakfast stops being served. Unfortunately that leaves us a bit lost and so we look up a few options, before settling on Aubergines in South Fremantle, just down the road from Run Amuk hotdogs.

Neither of us have been to Aubergines before, but I'd heard from work colleagues in the past that it was a nice spot for breakfast. We're hoping they're right as we make our way into the only partially full restaurant (which probably should have given me a bit of a warning then).

I love how dog friendly the place is - there's photos of dogs everywhere, with dogs all drinking from water bowls out the front, keeping their owners company as they eat. There's even free doggy biscuits on the counter for diners to treat their pups. As an animal lover, it's a nice environment.

We order at the counter, which unfortunately is cash only so we need to go over to IGA across the road to take money out. Already this morning is feeling a bit disastrous and I'm wondering if it's just going to be one of those days where nothing goes smoothly.

The menu is a big painted mural on the far wall, with a pretty standard list to choose from. I have to admit there's nothing that really strikes my fancy and so I settle on just having the Free Range Eggs ($9.90) which I choose as scrambled. Jeremy chooses the Breakfast Burrito ($15) and we both order a Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice ($6.50 each) for our beverages.

The prices are extremely reasonable for the food, though I am getting a bit tired of fresh juice having such a hefty price tag when it's only placing oranges into a blender. Nothing really difficult about it!

Jeremy's dish comes out quite cutely presented; a toasted burrito that has chorizo, egg and spring onion inside with a bottle of tobasco to give you some added chilli kick. It's a simple dish, but the ingredients are well utilised and the flavour is enjoyable.

I like that they've toasted the burrito to give it a nice crunch to the tortilla; and that there's a decent amount of filling to chomp away at.

My dish is pretty much as expected - two thick cut pieces of toast with butter on the side and a pile of scrambled eggs. There's cheese inside the scrambled eggs, which is not my preference at all but the texture of the eggs is nice, though a little wet.

I like my scrambled eggs buttery, but these are more milky and the use of whole peppercorns instead of crushed means every now and then I find my mouth overpowered by pepper which is not something I personally enjoy.

The toast is nice though, thick and crunchy on the outside with a smooth centre. As a butter addict, I find myself slathering a decent amount on top which unfortunately is more satisfying than the eggs.

I make scrambled eggs often at home, and while I'm not saying I cook them better than others, I know what my personal tastes are and that's why I usually don't order them. These eggs at Aubergine weren't bad by any means, but they just weren't as good as I was hoping for. They were, just eggs. A silly sounding statement I know!

I am happy to report that our freshly squeezed orange juices were lovely and zingy; light and cold. It is a refreshing sweet hit for the morning, but sadly both of our straws had holes in them which meant I ended up sipping the drink and having juice squirt me in the face! If it hadn't been a comedy of errors already that day I would have laughed.

All up, our breakfast at Aubergines was okay. It wasn't bad, nor was it fantastic, it was a simple and thankfully not expensive meal out in beautiful Fremantle. I don't think I'd come back, but I'm not leaving with a bad taste in my mouth, just a craving for an exciting breakfast soon instead. But thankfully our Malaysian feast that followed a few hours later was enough to satisfy my flavour craving tastebuds.

  3. I went some time back last year and found it to be very average too. Shame because I too had also heard it used to be amazing.
